Tips for a Safer Windows XP Computer

Be Aware - The best way to start protecting yourself is to be aware that attackers want your personal information and will use your computer to try to get it! Always be on your guard and ensure your family as aware of this too.

Use a Personal Firewall - The free one with Windows XP will do the job, but if you are a little technical there are others that are better but make sure you have one!

Use Antivirus and Anti-Spyware - Always have an Antivirus and Anti-Spyware (sometimes called Anti-Malware) application running and up to date. The best way to start protecting yourself is to be aware that attackers want your personal information and will use your computer to try to get it! Always be on your guard and ensure your family as aware of this too.

Think Before Opening Attachments - Even if you no the person sending the email! If a friend get infected it is possible for an email to come from their email without them sending it. Bottom-line, if you are not expecting an attachment double check it was sent intentionally before you open it yourself.

Be Wary of Clicking on Web Links - It is easy for attackers to make a link look like one thing but send you somewhere else. Always type addresses for Web site that you trust (like your Bank) rather than clicking a link in an email or on a Web page.

Use a Pop-up Blocker - Windows XP with Service Pack 2 includes a Pop-Up blocker that can help stop those annoying windows that popup to try and tempt you to click some amazing offer. This pop-ups have also been used to redirect people to an attackers Web site so blocking these pop-ups by default is good.

Beware of Downloads and ActiveX Controls - Whenever you download a program or Active X control from the Internet you are exposing your computer to risk. Always ensure you trust the source of the file before you run it and don’t be tempted by “free” versions of software advertised online, these offer are usually to “good to be true” because they are NOT true!
